The integration of Western Balkan countries into the European Union (EU) would enhance the stability of Europe, according to Franco Dal Mas, the Secretary General of the Central European Initiative (CEI), during his meeting with Foreign Minister Ervin Ibrahimović.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MVP), Ibrahimović welcomed Dal Mas today and discussed the significance of EU enlargement for European stability, emphasizing the accession of the Western Balkan nations to the EU.

Dal Mas emphasized that EU integration for the region is a vital objective for the CEI, alongside the enhancement of interstate cooperation.

He further highlighted the necessity of unity in tackling complex challenges facing Europe and commended Montenegro for its progress in the reform process.

“The accession of the Western Balkans to the EU would greatly contribute to European stability. We commend Montenegro’s efforts towards EU membership and aspire for it, as a regional leader in EU integration, to join the Union by 2028,” stated Dal Mas.

Ibrahimović congratulated Dal Mas on his new role and noted that Montenegro’s selection for one of the first inaugural visits underscores the country’s significant contributions to CEI operations and its successful advancements in the EU accession process.

He underscored that the CEI, as the oldest regional initiative, plays an important role in expediting the accession process, and that bolstering its capabilities aligns with enhancing Europe’s global role.

“In light of the strategic importance of EU membership, the minister pointed out the risks posed by hybrid threats and external influences,” the statement indicated.

Ibrahimović remarked that Montenegro’s entry into the EU would serve as a powerful signal of commitment to shared values and the European future of the region.

“By joining the EU, Montenegro would communicate that we embrace the same values, indicating that the Western Balkans is prepared to be part of the European family,” Ibrahimović asserted.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that it was mutually recognized that maintaining good neighborly relations and fostering regional cooperation is fundamental to stability and prosperity, as well as a crucial aspect of the region’s European perspective.
