The Minister of Justice, Bojan Božović, expressed his approval of the Supreme Court of Montenegro’s decision, which upheld the Court of Appeal’s ruling from November 28, 2024, regarding Ilir Đokaj, who was accused of murdering Šejla Bakija. He highlighted that this ruling is a significant milestone in reinforcing the judicial system and a testament to its commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of victims.
“The Ministry of Justice is resolute in its efforts against gender-based violence and femicide. The proposed amendments to the Criminal Code will enforce a minimum imprisonment term of ten years, or a longer prison sentence, for anyone who takes the life of a woman based on gender-related reasons,” he stated.
“We have a responsibility to deliver justice for victims, ensuring that the legal system clearly and decisively penalizes the most egregious forms of violence against women. Our commitment to enhancing the legislative framework and implementing effective measures to fight femicide in Montenegro will continue,” Božović remarked in a Facebook post.
