The opening 60 minutes of the pre-Olympic tournament were not the best for the Montenegrin handball team.
They secured a victory against Paraguay (30:25), and while the win is positive, the South American team posed significant challenges to Bojana Popović’s squad with their unconventional handball style.
Now, two crucial matches await in Ulm, with their next opponent being the host nation, Germany, who convincingly defeated Slovenia, coached by Dragan Adžić (31:25), in their first match.
Germany rightfully holds the favorite status for Saturday’s match (14:15 p.m.), but Montenegro is prepared for a fierce battle, according to pivot Bobana Klikovac.
“Germany is a powerful and well-organized team, and we must not underestimate any player. They possess strong wings, backs, goalkeepers, and pivots, and they are solid in every position. I anticipate a challenging game; we need to prepare meticulously and maintain composure in attack, as that could be vital for victory, alongside a robust defense,” remarked Bobana Klikovac.
A win for Montenegro would be a significant step toward qualifying for the Olympic Games, with the top two teams from the Ulm tournament earning a spot.
“We understand the importance of victory; these are the matches that define our careers. Every player dreams of participating in the Olympic Games—some for the first time, and others for the fourth time,” Bobana shared, eagerly anticipating the support from fans in the upcoming match.
“It’s always uplifting to play in front of a large crowd. Their support is as much a boost for us as it is for the Germans. I hope we can count on strong backing from our fans; it would mean a great deal to us,” Klikovac added.
She also reflected on the game against Paraguay.
“The most crucial aspect is that we emerged victorious and finished the match without injuries. We need to rectify the mistakes made in that game, particularly in our attack,” she noted.
Winger Nina Bulatović expressed that Germany’s win over Slovenia was expected.
“I wouldn’t say we were surprised by Germany’s performance in their first match. During our preparations, we focused on both the German and Slovenian players, understanding their capabilities as well as those of each individual player. Germany is a formidable team, well-rounded at every position, but we know what’s at stake and what we need to accomplish,” Bulatović commented.
