New Playground Unveiled in Stara Varoš, Nikšić
The youngest residents of Stara Varoš in Nikšić have informed Mayor Marko Kovačević that while their younger friends have received two new playgrounds over the last four years, they are still in need of a space for sports activities.
“I relayed their request to the appropriate municipal authorities and the president of the Local Community. We initiated this project, which was successfully concluded just before the summer season, ensuring that children have a space to play. We’ve also added more parking spots and enhanced security for their play area, making it safe and enjoyable for both children and their parents,” Kovačević stated at the inauguration of the newly constructed playground alongside his team.
He emphasized the closing of the passage between the buildings and Meander to enhance pedestrian safety.
“During the latest Municipal Assembly session, we identified the acquisition of the entire area between these buildings and Meander as a public interest. In the near future, we aim to adapt this space effectively and begin landscaping the yard around the high-rise building, which we beautified a few years back,” added Kovačević.
He commended the efforts of the leadership within the Varoš Local Community (MZ) and noted that in upcoming terms of office, they will need to focus on feedback from local communities and citizen needs, especially those of the youth, to address them effectively.
Aleksandar Vujović, president of the Stara Varoš Local Community, mentioned that the new playground will honor local athlete Sreten Sret Radinović.
“This individual grew up in Stara Varoš, was an athlete, and bravely battled a serious illness. He exemplified resilience, and we aim to inspire our younger generations with his story,” Vujović remarked.
He highlighted their aim to provide playgrounds for children to encourage them to disconnect from their phones and embrace healthier lifestyles. The “famous basketball court in Stara Varoš,” where this new playground was established, has been a longstanding symbol of the neighborhood.
Jelena Šekarić, Secretary of the Secretariat for Investments and Projects, stated that the renovations were conducted by the company DOO “Ađi invest,” with a total cost of 125 thousand euros and expert oversight provided by the Agency for Design and Planning.
“This investment encompassed the rehabilitation of the macadam surface, which involved the creation of parking spaces, sidewalks, a green belt, and the construction of a basketball court that has represented Stara Varoš for over 60 years,” Šekarić elaborated.
