North Macedonia is grieving deeply, as the nation mourns the tragic loss of 59 young lives in a disco fire in Kočani.
While nothing can bring back those 59 souls, one of the former Yugoslav republics rightfully takes pride in their bravery; they did not hesitate to help their fellow citizens, even at the cost of their own lives.
Among them was Andrej Lazarov, a 25-year-old local football player for Škupi, a club from the Skopje region competing in the First League of North Macedonia.
In recent days, both local and international media, including “Marka,” “Gazeta dello Sport,” and “L’Equipe,” have covered Lazarov’s courageous actions.
“Andrei Lazarov died a hero,” declared the Italian publication, with the French outlet adding:
“His bravery will forever be remembered.”
According to his club, Lazarov lost his life while attempting to assist those trapped in the nightmare of the nightclub fire.
Guided by his heroic spirit, he rushed to help without a second thought, but sadly, he succumbed to burns and smoke inhalation. He refused to abandon his fellow citizens, including children, ultimately sacrificing himself in the process.
“Andrej Lazarov was a hero until the very end, losing his life as he tried to help others escape the inferno. He suffocated in the smoke while selflessly saving lives, demonstrating courage and humanity to the last moment,” Škupi shared on social media.
The North Macedonian club will forever honor the memory of their hero.
“His heroic act will remain in our hearts forever, a testament to his noble character and great compassion,” the club stated.
Born 25 years ago in Kočani, Lazarov played as a midfielder. Throughout his career, he represented Škupi, Rabotnicki, and Tikveš in his homeland, as well as Rudeš and Gorica in Croatia.
He was brought to Rudeš by Montenegrin coach Robert Prosinecki, who managed the club in the Zagreb area during 2023.
“Prosinecki recognized his qualities as a skilled midfielder, which led to his recruitment. You rarely encounter such kind and genuine individuals,” remarked Stipe Čondrić, director of Rudeš, in a recent interview with “Sportske novosti.”
