“New Criteria for Friday Protests Reached”
Opposition representatives in Šavnik have persisted in their blockade of the Šavnik-Žabljak road today.
“Today, Slađana Kaluđerović from the SNP expressed her support. An agreement on new protest criteria is expected on Friday,” the opposition informed “Vijesti.” They have been blocking the road for over a month, since February 27, in protest against the re-election of Jugoslav Jakić (DPS) as the municipality’s mayor, yet no officials have reached out to them.
Initially, the blockade lasted two hours, followed by an extension of half an hour, and now, on Sundays, it endures for three hours, from noon to 3 PM.
The blockade is being organized by the coalitions “For the Future of Šavnik” (NSD, SNP, DNP) and “Let’s Go People” (DCG, UCG, PES).
Two weeks ago, they sent a letter to the presidents of the state, parliament, and government—Jakov Milatović, Andrija Mandić, and Milojko Spajić—requesting a meeting to discuss potential resolutions to the crisis in Šavnik. So far, the meeting has not taken place.
On February 19, Jakić was re-elected as the president of the Municipality of Šavnik, thanks to the votes of councilors from the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and the Social Democrats (SD), who participated in the Zoom meeting.
The elections in Šavnik began on October 23, 2022, along with polls in 13 additional municipalities, but were not concluded due to members of the polling stations from the opposition coalition For the Future of Šavnik blocking certain newly registered voters’ access. They claimed these voters were coerced into supporting the DPS. At two polling stations—one in the Municipal building and the other in the village of Kruševice—citizens attempted to vote nine times, with the last occurrence on December 18, 2022, when voting was halted again. Following this, the Municipal Election Commission (MEC) was unable to reach an agreement regarding the repetition of the electoral process at these two locations.
