Spajić Discusses Potential Program for Asylum Seekers in the UK Balkans: Montenegro Excluded from Participation

Today, Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić declared that Montenegro will not participate in a program that would send rejected asylum seekers from the United Kingdom to the Balkans.

“Montenegro is not involved in this program; however, we do not rule out the possibility of other regional participants,” Spajić shared on the social media platform X.

The British Independent has reported that rejected asylum seekers in the UK might be given the option to be relocated to the Balkans as part of a plan by the Labour government to tackle the growing issue of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats.

According to Migration Watch UK, over 5,200 migrants have entered Britain through small boats in 2025 alone.

The Independent states that, under proposed measures by the British government, “return centres” abroad would serve to accommodate individuals whose asylum requests have been denied.

This approach would mark a departure from the unsuccessful scheme the Conservatives attempted with Rwanda, where individuals arriving in small boats were sent there on a one-way basis, irrespective of their asylum qualifications.

The Times newspaper, which was the first to report on this developing plan, suggested that the UK might reach out to Albania, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia.

As per reports from the Times, citing British government sources, London is considering compensating the nations that accept these asylum seekers for each migrant received.
