After Montenegro regained its independence, Primorac clinched the first two championships, but then faded from the spotlight of major water polo events—since the two titles won by Budva, the era has predominantly belonged to the Adriatic.
For the most part, the team from Herceg Novi has secured the championship with relative ease, boasting a remarkable streak of nine consecutive titles. However, the earlier finals this season have not been particularly dramatic.
Now, as the second match of the championship final nears, Primorac is set to host Jadran at 6 PM after their break at Škver (9:6). A victory here would bring them just one step away from clinching the title.
“We’re pleased with the break, but we’re not finished yet,” emphasized the key player of Primorac, Drasko Brguljan, during an interview with Radio Kotor. “Jadran remains the favorite; they are Champions League competitors, perennial champions, and have bolstered their team compared to last season.”
Conversely, Jadran is solely focused on reclaiming the break advantage at home.
“It’s crucial to regain the break from Škver, and our team is prepared for that. We approach this match with even more determination because we cannot afford to lose,” stated Jovan Vujović, the center for Jadran.
The esteemed water polo player from Kotor understands the challenges that lie ahead in this second match.
“I anticipate a more aggressive approach from Jadran than what we observed in Herceg Novi, and it’s up to us to counter that. If our defense is as effective as it was at Škver, I believe we have a strong chance,” Brguljan expressed.
Vujović also acknowledged the pressure that comes with being the reigning champion.
“Certainly, we feel the pressure since we’ve been champions for several years; this season, we’ve improved our squad even further,” remarked the Jadran player.
In addition to the title, there is another significant incentive at play.
“The champion earns a place in the Champions League—this adds extra pressure, but it also brings more adrenaline and motivation for us to play,” Vujović noted.
For Primorac, a strong desire to repay their loyal fans will also serve as motivation…
“We have a loyal following that attends every game, regardless of the opponent—this has been the case for several years, and I’m glad to be part of creating a positive narrative for Primorac,” concluded Brguljan.
