In an impressive victory, Arsenal snapped their three-match winless streak by defeating Chelsea 29-1 at home in the Premier League’s 0th round.
While Arsenal closed the gap to Liverpool to 12 points, the Gunners are more focused on securing a position among the top four as the season progresses.
Arsenal currently sits in second place with 58 points, which puts them nine points ahead of their rival today and ten points above reigning champions Manchester City.
The match at the Emirates was decided in the 20th minute, when Merino found the net after a corner and a cross from Odegaard.
After two consecutive wins, Chelsea faced disappointment in today’s match and squandered a key opportunity at the end of the first half due to Kukurelja’s misfire.
Merino had a chance to double the lead after an hour, but Sanchez made a great save to deny him.
With today’s goal, Merino marked his fifth in the Premier League, tying his personal best for goals in a single season.
In other action, Fulham secured a 2-0 win over Tottenham with goals from Muniz and Sessegnon.
