PES Suggests Consolidating All Upcoming Local Elections to a Single Day
The Europe Now Movement advocates for all upcoming local elections in Montenegro to be conducted on a single day, aiming to shift the political focus back to the issues that truly matter to citizens—local, communal, and economic matters that significantly influence their quality of life, as announced by PES Executive Director Vlade Bojović.
Bojović stated, “For years, the political entities that have gained the most support are those that have historically divided Montenegro through their rhetoric and actions. Unfortunately, this trend persists at the local level—as illustrated by the situation in Budva. Instead of providing concrete solutions, citizens are still confronted with divisions, outdated issues, and nationalistic tensions.”
Božović expressed particular concern that this environment “has been driving young people away from Montenegro for years.”
“This phenomenon is most evident in smaller municipalities, which are losing their most valuable asset—educated, ambitious, and capable young individuals. Rather than fostering an environment that encourages them to stay, work, start families, and contribute to their communities, we have witnessed a series of policies that compel them to leave. This needs to change.”
PES believes that the elections in Nikšić and Herceg Novi could serve as a pivotal moment, allowing citizens to signal their desire for development rather than division.
Bojović noted, “We believe the time has come for parties that support European values, aimed at improving living standards, raising salaries and pensions, attracting investments, and fostering local community development to finally gain recognition at the local level.”
Bojović further stated that PES is ready to assume responsibility and “demonstrate how local governance can be effectively, modernly, and dynamically managed”—through practical projects, creating opportunities for youth, and “restoring hope to every municipality in Montenegro.”
“It is time for local policies to focus on a vision of development rather than the divisive narratives of the past century. Montenegro deserves a local government that unites rather than divides. Europe Now stands for local development, youth opportunities, and a life free from divisions,” the statement concluded.
