Today, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić asserted that neither the Serbian Army nor the “Cobra” military police unit possesses a sound cannon, which some allege was deployed during Saturday’s protests in Belgrade. He announced that an investigation into those who allegedly spread these falsehoods will conclude within 48 hours.
“The comprehensive investigation will wrap up in 48 hours, and those responsible for these fabrications will face the consequences,” Vučić stated in a video shared on Instagram.
He emphasized that no such device was present on the streets, as it would be impossible for it to go unnoticed.
“The Army and the Cobras do not possess a sound cannon at all. There is no sound cannon in the Serbian Army,” Vučić clarified, adding that some individuals mistakenly believed that Cobras members were carrying that weapon near the Presidency building, but it was, in fact, an anti-drone rifle.
Vučić also claimed that no one reported feeling ill during the protest but noted that “activists were sent the following day.”
He further remarked that similar narratives circulated during the Ukrainian “Maidan” protests.
“You recall the allegations that Yanukovych brought in snipers to shoot at the people… That’s how it all started here too – ‘Vučić, you shot at the people…’ This is yet another malicious lie, aiming to bring down Serbia,” Vučić remarked.
He expressed pride in how the nation has maintained peace and stability amidst numerous destabilization attempts. He refuted claims that individuals from the camp in Pionirski Park would attack the protestors, suggesting they would be confronted “by genuine military veterans,” and denied rumors that the government would block roads in Belgrade or shut down the internet and social media.
Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabić commented today that the Extended Rector’s Board of the University of Belgrade issued a statement yesterday, denouncing the assertion of a non-existent sound cannon, and held all involved responsible for causing public disturbance and spreading misinformation in an effort to reignite a colored revolution.
“Following the failed color revolution on March 15th, there is ongoing sensationalism from the University of Belgrade as they release press statements that merely serve to alarm the public and incite panic; those responsible must be held accountable,” Brnabić told TV Pink.
She insisted that “there is no truth to the story of the sonic cannon; it is clearly just bad news.”
“What’s next, someone claiming that Aleksandar Vučić discovered Godzilla in the Japanese mountains, secretly transported it, and unleashed it on the student protestors to devour them one by one?” Brnabić quipped.
She highlighted that “the system must function properly; enough is enough after four months,” indicating that the Serbian Parliament has a responsibility to oversee the enforcement of the law.
“The whole country can no longer disregard that the Law on Higher Education and the Law on Student Organizations are not being enforced; they are violating the Constitution. The Constitution apparently does not apply to them, as if the rector and deans are above the law, the Constitution, and even the government that received 2.3 million votes,” Brnabić asserted.
