The Montenegrin boxing team concluded its participation in the international junior tournament, the Greatest Open in Lazarevac, with a total of eight medals—four gold, two silver, and two bronze.
They capped off their successful outing by being recognized as the top team among seven participating countries.
Gold medals were awarded to Luka Otašević, Strahinja Mrdak, Andrija Nikitović, and Matija Roganović. Silver medals went to Nikola Raičević and Andrija Ćeranić, while Veselin Dedić and Nikola Nenezić secured bronze medals.
Coach Nikola Ružić expressed his satisfaction with the performances of the Montenegrin junior boxers at the highly competitive tournament in Lazarevac.
“Being named the best team of the tournament with four gold medals demonstrates that our juniors are highly experienced and skilled for their age, already competing at a serious level. Our goal is to offer them as many quality international tournaments and training camps as possible this year to unleash their full potential,” Ružić stated.
Ružić was supported by coaches Boško Drašković and Slavko Mrdak as part of the coaching staff.
Matija Roganović claimed his gold medal impressively, defeating all three of his opponents by knockout in the 80-kilogram category.
In the final, he forced Serbian national team player Vasilije Kovčić to retire in the first round, thus avenging his national teammate Nikola Nenezić’s earlier loss in the semifinals.
After triumphing in the semifinals against local contender Lazar Milić by unanimous decision, Luka Otašević went on to defeat Greek boxer Alexandros Konstantinoudis by a score of 46:2 in the gold medal match for the 51-kilogram category.
Strahinja Mrdak also showcased dominance, defeating Serbian national team member Ljubo Mitrović in the final of the 50-kilogram category by stoppage just in the first round.
Earlier, he had defeated Greek boxer Zikos Dimostenis in the semifinals.
Nikitović secured gold in the 52-kilogram category, achieving clear victories against two members of the Hungarian national team—Enrique Lakatos and Tamas Onodi.
Nikola Raičević (under 48 kg) had to settle for silver after a final loss to Serbia’s Pavle Popović, while Andrija Ćeranić (under 66 kg) also claimed silver after losing to Hungary’s Levente Turos in the fight for gold.
Along the path to the finals, Veselin Dedić faced elimination (up to 70 kg) at the hands of Serbian national team member Vuk Čedić, while Nikola Nenezić was also stopped by compatriot Vasilije Kovčić through the judges’ decision.
