Liverpool Falls Short as Newcastle Clinches League Cup, Ending 70-Year Drought
Liverpool faced elimination from the Champions League on Tuesday, marking the end of their pursuit for one trophy, having also exited the FA Cup earlier. Today, they lost yet another chance at silverware, as the “Reds” suffered a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle in the English League Cup final at Wembley.
This victory represents Newcastle’s first trophy in English football in 70 years, with their last being the FA Cup in 1955. It also marks the Magpies’ inaugural triumph in the League Cup.
Liverpool delivered one of their most disappointing performances of the season. In the early moments, Van Dijk thwarted Newcastle’s attempt to score, followed by Barnes squandering a goal-scoring opportunity.
Newcastle maintained the pressure throughout the first half while Liverpool struggled to find their rhythm. Tonali missed a crucial chance midway through the period, and in the 34th minute, both Isaac and Trippier posed threats.
Newcastle broke the deadlock in the 45th minute when Trippier’s corner was met with a header from Burn, placing the ball in the net.
Following the goal, Liverpool created a significant opportunity, but Žota failed to capitalize in the penalty area.
The 52nd minute saw Newcastle extend their lead – Murphy delivered a header to Isaac, who calmly slotted the ball home to make it 2-0.
After going two down, Liverpool intensified their efforts, but Isak missed a chance to ensure victory and Murphy also failed to score.
In injury time, the Reds mounted a response – Elliott provided an assist, and Chiesa netted a goal.
However, there was no time left for further action, and Newcastle made history with their triumph.
