Every Increment of Change Matters
“The availability of drinking water is diminishing globally. While the residents of Nikšić are fortunate to have it, we must protect this vital resource and be more responsible in its use,” stated Milijana Abramović, coordinator of the “Vidrovanka” initiative from Nikšić’s Vodovod.
This locally focused campaign, coinciding with World Water Day, is being orchestrated by DOO Vodovod i kanalizacija in collaboration with the non-governmental organizations “Ekopatriotism” and “Optimists.” Preschool children from the “Kosovka djevojka” educational unit joined in by distributing drinking water in eco-friendly aluminum bottles adorned with the campaign’s slogan at the city square. The children also created drawings and messages emphasizing the importance of drinking water and environmental awareness.
“Thanks to our initiative, we have connected with like-minded individuals who regard drinking water as the most valuable natural resource, not only for Nikšić but for all of Montenegro. We bear the responsibility to preserve it for ourselves and future generations. This is our moral and social duty,” Abramović expressed.
She mentioned the positive involvement of institutions, NGOs, and children in the campaign.
“Nikšić’s water is of excellent quality, a luxury that is entirely out of reach for many in the world. It’s crucial that we recognize this fact and approach its usage with greater responsibility. The core aim of the campaign is to foster environmental awareness and promote the conscientious and rational use of drinking water. Our children articulated this wonderfully with their message – Every drop of change matters,” Abramović commented.
Boško Milović from the NGO “Optimisti” noted that one of the campaign’s objectives is to encourage people in Nikšić to “utilize more tap water and reduce their consumption of bottled water.”
“We hope these bottles are used appropriately. Our goal is to initiate this conversation, ensuring that water is safeguarded and we don’t have to worry about losing this vital resource,” Milović emphasized.
Since its inception, “Ekopatriotism” has highlighted the significance of water, advocating for the protection of Gračanica and other rivers, with a current focus on drinking water.
“We had no hesitation in engaging with this project to stress the importance of water for all life on Earth. Our mission is to enhance awareness, helping people realize the need to not waste or misuse water unnecessarily and to convey that water is invaluable,” stated Ivana Čogurić from “Ekopatriotizma.”
