Montenegro Takes the Lead in the Integration Process
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro, Mr. Ervin Ibrahimović, hosted the Secretary General of the Central European Initiative (CEI), Franco Dal Mas, to deliberate on the crucial role of European Union enlargement for the security of Europe and the importance of the Western Balkan nations’ accession to the EU.
While congratulating Dal Mas on his new position, the Minister highlighted that Montenegro’s selection as one of his initial official stops underscores the country’s significant contribution to the CEI’s activities and its positive outcomes in the EU accession journey. He pointed out that the CEI, being the oldest regional initiative, plays a pivotal role in expediting the EU accession process and emphasized that “enhancing its capabilities aligns with bolstering Europe’s global influence.”
In light of the strategic importance of EU membership, the Minister raised concerns about the risks of hybrid threats and external interference, noting that Montenegro’s integration into the EU would serve as a strong signal of dedication to shared values and the region’s European future. “Rather than our region being a breeding ground for destabilizing forces, Montenegro’s EU accession would convey that we uphold the same values and that the Western Balkans is ready to join the European family,” stated Ibrahimović.
The CEI Secretary General Dal Mas acknowledged that the EU integration of the region is a primary focus of the initiative, along with enhancing intergovernmental collaboration. He stressed the necessity of unity in addressing the multifaceted challenges faced in Europe and praised Montenegro for its progress in the reform process. “The Western Balkans’ accession to the EU would augment European stability. We recognize Montenegro’s dedication to its EU path and hope it, as a frontrunner in EU integration for the region, becomes a Union member by 2028,” said Dal Mas.
Both parties concurred that fostering good neighborly relations and regional cooperation is essential for stability and prosperity, serving as a cornerstone for the region’s European perspective.
