The Future Owes Her Every Earned Penny
The women’s handball club Budućnost is required to pay former captain Milena Raičević all outstanding wages, as determined by the European Court of Arbitration for Handball.
“The European Court of Arbitration for Handball in Vienna fully upheld the claim of player Milena Raičević and issued a verdict on June 17th, stipulating that ŽRK Budućnost must pay her all unpaid wages for the 2020/21 season, along with statutory default interest beginning from August 1, 2021,” stated Miloš Vukčević, attorney for Milena Raičević.
“I would like to remind everyone that Budućnost denied payment of wages to my client during her pregnancy and maternity leave, arguing that she wasn’t entitled to them as she wasn’t playing or performing for the club during that time. This verdict is final, and the club is required to comply within 15 days of its issuance, which means today, July 2, is the deadline. I anticipate that the club’s management will adhere to the verdict, and I would like to remind them that they have publicly committed, through various media outlets, to comply with the decision of the European Court of Arbitration for Handball regarding Milena Raičević. Therefore, I have no doubt that, as responsible and professional management, they will honor their public commitments,” Vukčević emphasized.
He added:
“I truly hope that there will be no necessity for me to invoke the enforcement mechanisms available to me under the EHF legal framework,” Vukčević concluded.
Last November, Budućnost initially removed the captain’s armband from Milena Raičević and subsequently transferred her to the Rudar branch after she filed a lawsuit against the club for unpaid wages from the 2020/2021 season, during which she was pregnant.
At that time, Budućnost claimed that the contract was established under the previous club president Radmila Petrović for the 2020/21 season.
“We find the claims under litigation to be unfounded, as Raičević could not fulfill her contractual obligations in the mentioned season, and therefore she is not entitled to full remuneration,” stated Budućnost at the time.
