Florian Wirtz, a player from Bayer Leverkusen, is set to be sidelined for several weeks due to an ankle injury.
The German midfielder sustained a medial ligament injury in his right ankle during Saturday’s match against Werder Bremen, as reported by the club. Wirtz was substituted in the 59th minute of the game, which concluded with a 0-2 loss for Bayer Leverkusen.
“Florian’s injury will certainly impact us at this critical point in the season, but we will adjust with a strong team. We believe in Florian and are confident that he will return as soon as he can. Everyone is here to support him, and we anticipate him being back in peak form for the final stretch of the season,” stated Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes.
Wirtz is currently Leverkusen’s leading scorer in the Champions League this season, netting six goals, and he holds the title of the Bundesliga’s top assist provider with 12 assists.
Bayer Leverkusen sits second in the Bundesliga standings with 53 points, trailing first-place Bayern Munich by eight points, their rivals in the Champions League round of 22. The team’s impressive unbeaten run in the German league was halted by the defeat against Werder Bremen in the previous round.
