Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that the closing of negotiation chapters and the attainment of other critical goals indicate Montenegro is progressing well towards joining the European Union (EU). He further noted Hungary’s unwavering support for the enlargement process.

The Government announced that Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Filip Ivanović, spoke with Szijjártó during his recent visit to Budapest.

They discussed the current state of bilateral relations and reaffirmed Hungary’s ongoing support for Montenegro’s EU membership ambitions.

Szijjártó emphasized Hungary’s commitment to the EU enlargement process, expressing pride in the country’s contribution to Montenegro’s reform efforts.

“The closing of negotiation chapters and reaching other significant milestones clearly demonstrate that Montenegro is on the right track toward EU accession,” Szijjártó remarked.

Ivanović expressed gratitude for Hungary’s steadfast support of Montenegro, particularly during its recent six-month presidency of the EU Council.

He highlighted Hungary’s vital role in aiding Montenegro’s accession journey.

According to Ivanović, through the diligent efforts of the Montenegrin government and Hungary’s commitment, Montenegro made substantial progress in December by closing three negotiation chapters, marking a first in seven years.

Both leaders agreed that the ties between Montenegro and Hungary are excellent and will continue to grow at all levels.

“They discussed collaboration in economic, security, educational, and cultural sectors, highlighting successful Hungarian investments in Montenegro as a key foundation for further enhancing bilateral relations,” the statement noted.

Ivanović thanked Szijjártó for his ongoing dedication to facilitating the rapid EU accession of the Western Balkan nations, with Montenegro at the forefront.

He expressed confidence that with the backing of Hungary and other EU states, Montenegro would achieve full EU membership by 2028.

Lastly, both interlocutors pledged to further intensify the political dialogue and cooperation between Montenegro and Hungary, affirming that collaboration will continue to grow in all areas of mutual interest.
