The Deputy Mayor of Podgorica, Olivera Injac, along with Luka Rakčević, has shared on Instagram that the city will exert every effort to sustain the women’s handball club Budućnost and aims to address some of its issues.
Budućnost has been without a primary sponsor since July 1st, following the departure of the company “Bemax” from the club.
In an interview with “Dan,” the club’s executive director and renowned Montenegrin handball player, Maja Bulatović, mentioned that the club is facing a possible shutdown.
“It is imperative that we prevent the closure of the Budućnost Women’s Handball Club. This is both our moral and sporting obligation. The capital city will strive to maintain the team and tackle at least some of the challenges we face. I am happy to report that the owners of ŽRK wish for the city to reclaim oversight of the club, as this will ultimately ensure its stability and functionality,” stated Rakčević.
He further expressed, “Every generation in our city has contributed a piece of itself to the intricate tapestry of the illustrious history of the most successful club in our region.”
“From our first European trophy achieved by the remarkable Vinko generation, led by the Mugoš sisters, Katica Lješković, and Olga Sekulić, to later generations featuring legendary figures such as Nikola Petrović and Dragan Adžić, ŽRK Budućnost has become a hallmark of our city and a name that commands respect in global sports circles,” noted Rakčević in his announcement.
The Deputy Mayor of Podgorica emphasized that Budućnost has served as the backbone of the Montenegrin national team for many years, thus highlighting a greater responsibility to preserve the club and ensure its ongoing success.
“It is disheartening that the previous sponsor unexpectedly chose to withdraw, leaving behind significant financial issues that, even with the city’s support, cast doubt on basic operations and participation in the Champions League. While every sponsor has the right to terminate their sponsorship, we could have engaged in discussions months ago to strategize and prevent the club from suffering as a result of such transitions. We owe it to the club, the citizens, and all supporters. In the coming days, we will initiate formal procedures and discussions with the club’s owners, and the public will be kept informed regarding the current status, options, and plans for the future,” concluded Rakčević.
