“Victory Is the Only Positive Outcome: Despite My Warnings Over Three Days, Many Remained Unreceptive”

The Budućnost Voli basketball team staged a remarkable comeback in Železnik, recovering from an eight-point deficit with only 70 seconds remaining to secure a thrilling win.

In their final match of 2024, the “Blue and Whites” triumphed over FMP (91:88) following an impressive turnaround, allowing them to maintain their position at the top of the AdmiralBet ABA League alongside Partizan and Red Star.

While the win is undoubtedly significant, the Podgorica team recognizes that there were numerous issues in their performance during the game played in the outskirts of Belgrade.

“The only positive aspect of this match is the victory – I am not satisfied with many elements. We will need to discuss extensively and analyze everything. We must certainly strive to improve,” stated Andrej Žakelj, the coach of Budućnost.

The Montenegrin champions faced the risk of losing another one of these “smaller” matches, especially after their previous setback against Spartak in “Morača,” which overshadowed their recent commendable victory over Partizan in Belgrade.

“These types of matches are the most challenging – we all know it’s tough to compete when the opponent is under no pressure,” added Žakelj.

He also expressed admiration for his opponent, who had made changes to their lineup before this encounter.

“I congratulate FMP on an exceptional game and their competitive spirit – they had a fantastic approach,” remarked the Slovenian coach.

Žakelj did not shy away from indicating his concerns heading into this match…

“I have been emphasizing for three days that it would be incredibly difficult, yet it seems that some players did not acknowledge that fact as they should have. The coach bears responsibility for this, and I take full accountability for our mindset,” he concluded.

Budućnost looks forward to its next challenge on January 2, 2025, when they are set to visit Trefl Sopot in the Eurocup.
