As she previously indicated when departing from the Liberal Party, former vice president and councilor in the Nikšić Municipal Assembly, Jelena Marković, aims to play a significant role in the election process for the upcoming local elections on April 13 in Trebjes. The Montenegrin and Civic Movement group of voters is currently gathering signatures for a list that will be spearheaded by “a woman who has always been at the forefront of defending Montenegro.”
“Our efforts will extend to the national level, focusing on all citizens who believe in our leader and her vision. We are committed to preserving Montenegrin identity while also respecting the identities of minority communities, emphasizing equality and defending the human rights of every individual. Everything you recognize Jelena Marković for aligns with these principles, which will facilitate the realization of the primary program objectives of our forthcoming movement and voter group in the local elections in Nikšić. Thank you for your support, and you can count on us,” stated the Montenegrin and Civic Movement.
Marković shared with “Vijesti” that her choice to enter the electoral competition stems from her long-standing awareness that “our society is stagnating, or more accurately regressing, across all aspects of social life.”
“In truth, this does not constitute a democratic society. We see that leaders in all parties profess democracy and gender equality, yet in practice, it is the opposite, as their actions contradict their words. Our society is essentially a party-centric, captive one, with decision-makers feigning liberalism and democratic values, while their actions tell a different story. I have witnessed these discrepancies firsthand in my previous affiliations and other political parties, which not only fail to support women, but actively work to place them in precarious and subordinate roles,” Marković stated, noting that if she manages to gather sufficient signatures, she will be the only woman leading an electoral list in the upcoming Nikšić local elections.
She emphasized that her commitment to participating in the elections is fundamentally driven by the ambition to fight for a better status and rights for women in Montenegrin society, politics, and beyond.
“Undoubtedly, I highlight my dedication to my years of earnest and devoted work aimed at improving Montenegro and the lives of its citizens. For our society to progress towards democracy and align with European standards, I believe it is essential for women to occupy one of the two highest state functions, as this would catalyze progress within our community. The current scenario, where leadership positions are predominantly held by men, illustrates a dire situation and poses a threat to human rights and societal freedoms in all dimensions,” asserted Marković.
She reiterated her stance on advocating for equality, equity, and the respect for human rights.
“Under the slogan ‘For a libertarian Nikšić of equal opportunities – Jelena Marković’, I will demonstrate that I am genuinely and wholeheartedly committed to fighting for all the aforementioned principles, as well as the programmatic goals of the prospective Montenegrin and Civic Movement. This will undoubtedly represent an opportunity that promises security and a brighter future for all residents of Nikšić and Montenegro. Our struggle will persist in line with the positive energy embodied by my team, which is poised to incite meaningful changes in Nikšić and throughout Montenegro,” Marković concluded.
