A collective of Nikšić citizens, along with the family and friends of the late Ljubiša Mrdak, will stage a protest outside the prosecutor’s office in Podgorica tomorrow, March 7. They express their dissatisfaction with the recent acquittal of the suspects involved in the murder and robbery of a post office that took place on October 20, 2021.
The protest is set to commence at noon. The initial gathering occurred in Nikšić on February 27, just two days following the acquittal.
“They have until Friday, both the head of the prosecution and the head of the court, to show some accountability and step down over this heinous crime,” remarked Petar Vuković, the best man of the deceased Mrdak, at the rally in Nikšić.
Mitar Knežević, Stojan Albijanić, Nemanja Miljković, Petar Zolak, Srđan Svjetlanović, David Banjac, and Stefan Regojević were acquitted of the robbery charges, as the judge indicated there was insufficient evidence. This robbery resulted in the death of Mrdak, a security guard who attempted to safeguard money designated for pension payments.
The judge stated that the court was presented with a fait accompli and noted that due to “this indictment, the court had to assume the role of an investigative body.”
The Higher State Prosecutor’s Office in Podgorica has announced its intention to appeal this ruling.
Justice Minister Bojan Božović acknowledged the citizens’ concerns and indicated that, based on his discussions with the Supreme State Prosecutor and the President of the Supreme Court, legal proceedings are likely to continue.
Following the protest in Nikšić, Prime Minister Milojko Spajić met with the wife, son, and brother of the slain Mrdak, subsequently declaring that the case will not be closed until justice is delivered.
In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister emphasized that while respecting judicial independence, “we cannot passively accept ongoing and evident injustices.”
“If the situation does not improve soon, measures such as judicial vetting will become increasingly necessary, as this level of injustice is intolerable! The Mrdak family has the unwavering support of the 44th Government, the UP, and myself in their pursuit of the truth,” Spajić asserted.
