U.S. Republican Senator Chuck Grassley has expressed concerns that after the president of Republika Srpska (RS) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, “the separatists among the Bosnian Croats are now taking action,” cautioning that this will not bode well for them.
“Milorad Dodik, a Bosnian Serb leader, advocates for separatism. Now, the separatists among the Bosnian Croats are also making moves. This serves as a troubling reminder of the events from the 1990s when many were forced to flee amidst war and genocide. As it turned out for the separatists back then, it is unlikely to end well today,” Grassley noted in a post on the X network.
The authorities of Republika Srpska, under Dodik’s leadership, have made attempts to prohibit the operations of state judicial and police institutions within their territory, issuing threats of secession. Although the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina annulled the law enforcing this ban, the RS has shown resistance in adhering to the ruling.
Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio remarked on the X network that Milorad Dodik’s actions as President of the Bosnian entity Republika Srpska weaken the nation’s institutions and pose a threat to its safety and stability. He informed Voice of America on March 10 that the U.S. is exploring various responses to the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasizing that the disbanding of the state and a resurgence of conflict must be avoided at all costs.
“We do not want any divisions there… The last thing we need is another crisis, and we have clearly stated our position,” Rubio stated.
