After nine years, including silver in 2016 and bronze in 2020 at the European Championships, Vladimir Gojković has stepped down as the head coach of Montenegro’s water polo team.
The former star player leaves behind a rejuvenated team at a critical juncture, where changes are needed for the “sharks” to reclaim their status as leaders in European and world water polo.
Given these circumstances, Gojković’s former teammate from Montenegro’s glory days, Nikola Janović, believes the former coach’s contributions are still vital to Montenegrin water polo.
“As a friend and teammate, I wish you great success in your future endeavors and hope you will remain involved with our water polo,” Janović expressed on the social platform X.
The former “shark” captain continued in a similar vein, stating…
“We have experienced historical victories and challenges side by side. It is now imperative that we collectively find a path to new achievements. This is our duty to Montenegro and future generations,” Janović concluded.
Montenegro concluded its Olympic Games journey in Paris during the group stage, and since Gojković’s contract with the Water Polo and Swimming Association lapsed post-Games, it was mutually decided that he would not be a candidate for the head coaching position.
