The handball icon and a symbol of Podgorica, the Budućnost women’s handball club, is now officially a property of the capital city.

The mayor of Podgorica, Olivera Injac, and the founders of ŽRK Budućnost signed the agreement for the transfer of founding rights, as announced by the city authorities.

“This marks the official takeover of the club, which will now be managed by the Capital,” the announcement stated.

Nearly a month ago, during an Assembly session, the capital city resolved to assume the founding rights of the two-time European champion after its primary sponsor, Bemax, withdrew. The decision was supported by 34 councilors, with one member opposing it and another abstaining.

“Today, the process for the takeover of ŽRK Budućnost has been officially finalized, and we can proudly declare that the capital is now the sole owner of the club,” expressed Maja Bulatović, a Budućnost legend and the club’s executive director.

The club’s future secured

She expressed gratitude to Olivera Injac, Assembly President Jelena Borovinić Bojović, and Deputy Luka Rakčević for their swift response during what Bulatović described as the most challenging period in the club’s history.

“The club has been saved, and I believe it now has significant security and stability to avoid past crises. I would also like to thank all the councilors for their support, which clearly demonstrates that ŽRK Budućnost is a cherished brand of Montenegro,” remarked Maja Bulatović.

Olivera Injac, on her part, emphasized that this move reflects the city’s commitment during challenging times.

“It also signifies our dedication to this sports team with a long-standing tradition – the future is a significant value for Podgorica and all of Montenegro,” asserted Injac.

A crucial decision amidst political implications

She highlighted the intersection of politics and sports in Montenegro, where party interests often influence the operations of sports clubs.

“ŽRK Budućnost serves as an example, but we, the President of the Assembly of the Capital City, Jelena Borovinić Bojović, and I, decided to support the club during these trying times and initiate the transfer of founding rights to stabilize its situation. We aim for the club to become a nurturing environment for many young, talented girls and women to pursue handball… May ŽRK Budućnost once again become a source of pride for the capital and Montenegro,” Injac concluded.

Injac expressed her belief that investments in sports and youth are essential for both a city and a country.

“Thus, this decision holds great significance, despite its political undertones and attempts by some to leverage it. Nevertheless, I believe the true intent of this decision is to take control of the club and foster better conditions for the promotion of women’s handball, allowing the club to recapture its former glory,” she concluded.
