A Summer to Remember: Young Handball Players Relegated to Division B
The Montenegrin men’s cadet handball national team has been relegated from the elite ranks of European handball.
Under the guidance of coach Filip Popović, the team faced a disappointing defeat against Italy, losing 28:26 during the playoff for 17th to 24th place at the U18 European Championship held in Podgorica today.
This marks the second time Italy has triumphed over the Montenegrin national team in this tournament, leading to Montenegro’s placement in the B division for the next two years.
Despite holding a six-goal advantage at halftime, Montenegro could not secure the win, and even after leveling the score at 25:25 in the final moments, they ultimately fell short.
During the penalty shootout, Božović was the only player to convert his attempt, while Radoičić, Lalošević, and Gutić missed their chances, allowing Italy to claim a well-deserved victory and a shot at maintaining their spot in the A division against Romania.
Mario Maljević stood out for Montenegro, scoring six goals in the match.
The national team will play its final game of the championship on Sunday against Ukraine, competing for 23rd place.
This match carries little significance, as both teams have lost their A division status.
