The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) has announced today that the amended Decision regarding temporary protection for individuals from Ukraine (“Official Gazette of Montenegro” No. 21/25) is now in effect. This amendment permits individuals from Ukraine to extend their temporary protection until March 4, 2026, following a proposal from the MUP and approval by the Government of Montenegro.

“Through this action, Montenegro has once again showcased its compassionate nature and its commitment to align with the European Union’s foreign and security policy, adhering to the European Union Council’s decision that extends temporary protection for individuals from Ukraine until March 4, 2026. In light of this, changes to the Law on International and Temporary Protection of Aliens were made in mid-2024, facilitating the provision of temporary protection in accordance with EU Council directives,” stated the Ministry of Interior.

The government department led by Danilo Šaranović further noted that the establishment of legal frameworks and approval of this decision have enabled this group of foreigners to exercise their right to temporary protection freely.

“By securing the status of a foreigner under temporary protection, this group, in addition to the right to reside, also obtains unimpeded access to all rights associated with temporary protection as per the current legal provisions. We urge all individuals from Ukraine currently residing in Montenegrin municipalities under a temporary protection document, which is set to expire on March 11, 2025, to act promptly—within two weeks of the announcement of this Decision—by visiting their respective local regional unit/branch for civil status and personal documents to extend their temporary protection without delay,” emphasized the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
