Robust Italian Support for Montenegro’s European Path: A Leadership Role in the Balkans

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ervin Ibrahimović, held a meeting today in Podgorica with the President of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee of the Italian Senate, Stefania Craxi.

During their conversation, it was acknowledged that Montenegro and Italy maintain traditionally strong political and economic ties, based on their robust alliance within NATO. Both sides agreed that there exists substantial potential for enhancing collaboration across various sectors, including the economy, investments, tourism, transport, and defense.

Minister Ibrahimović expressed his appreciation for Italy’s ongoing political and expert support on Montenegro’s journey towards EU membership. Reflecting on the positive outcomes achieved in the European integration process over the past year, he underscored the activities Montenegro is undertaking in alignment with the reforms outlined in the EU agenda.

“In light of our citizens’ expectations, we have developed an ambitious yet realistic plan to sustain our reform momentum and aim to join the Union by 2028,” stated Ibrahimović, stressing the significance of Italy taking on the presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of that year. He noted that EU enlargement is crucial not only for the region but for Europe as a whole, particularly amid current geopolitical challenges.

Ms. Craxi emphasized that the enlargement policy is a fundamental aspect of Italy’s foreign policy priorities and commended Montenegro for being a leader in the Western Balkans’ European integration process.

“Montenegro plays a vital role and bears significant responsibility in the region,” Ms. Craxi asserted, adding that the Balkans—being a melting pot of cultures—can also be vulnerable to destabilizing influences. “The peace, stability, and prosperity of the Western Balkans are of mutual interest,” concluded Ms. Craxi.

The two interlocutors also exchanged perspectives on pressing regional and global issues, highlighting the necessity of maintaining the unity of the European Union and reinforcing Europe’s security and its standing on the world stage.
