Miodrag Božović, a Montenegrin expert, has been appointed the new head coach of Esteghlal, the historic giants of Tehran and the oldest football club in Iran.
As announced by the nine-time Iranian champions, Božović has signed a contract that extends through the current season, along with two additional coaches from Montenegro, Saša Petrović and Dejan Mrvaljević, joining his staff.
A noteworthy challenge ahead for Božović will be the round of 16 in the Asian Champions League, where he will soon compete in a two-legged match against the affluent Al-Nasr, a team featuring Cristiano Ronaldo.
The first leg is set for March 3rd in Tehran, with the return leg taking place a week later in Riyadh.
Esteghlal last secured the Iranian championship title in 2022 and has managed to stay ahead of Persepolis, the only domestic club with more championships (16) in the past two seasons.
This season, however, the “blues from the capital” have struggled, currently sitting in seventh place after 20 rounds of the domestic league, trailing the leaders, Tractor from Tabriz, by 18 points.
Over the course of his career, Božović has coached several teams, including Buducnost, Dinamo, Lokomotiv Moscow, Red Star, Arsenal Tula, and Neftchi Baku…
