Cvijanović: BiH’s Challenges Are Political, Not Security-Related; Bećirović and Komšić Call for Extraordinary Session

The Chairperson of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Željka Cvijanović (SNSD), stated during her discussion today with NATO Headquarters Commander in Sarajevo, Matthew Wallace, and EUFOR Commander in BiH, Florian – Marijan Barba, that the issues facing BiH are predominantly political rather than security-related.

Meanwhile, members of the Presidency of BiH, Denis Bećirović and Željko Komšić, have formally requested an extraordinary session of the Presidency to address the internal political climate in the country. This request comes in light of alleged assaults by the Republika Srpska (RS) authorities on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s constitutional order, as reported by Beta.

According to Radio Television of the Republic of Serbia (RTRS), Cvijanović conveyed to the NATO and EUFOR leaders the “unequivocal commitment of the Republic of Serbia to uphold peace and stability within Bosnia and Herzegovina.”

She reiterated her dedication to faithfully adhering to the Dayton Peace Agreement and emphasized that the institutions of RS are fully devoted to safeguarding both the Constitution and the constitutional order of BiH.

Cvijanović reportedly reminded the NATO and EUFOR commanders that all defense-related decisions in the Presidency of BiH require unanimous agreement among the three members, asserting that any deviation from this would render such decisions “illegal and non-binding for the Armed Forces of BiH.”

Bećirović and Komšić, as reported by media in Sarajevo, argue that it is essential for the Presidency of BiH to review the current internal political situation, considering the reported “attacks by the RS entity authorities on the constitutional order of BiH.”

They also believe it is the responsibility of state institutions to uphold BiH’s constitutional order and maintain peace and stability in the nation.

It has not been disclosed when the session will take place, according to Beta.

BiH is currently experiencing one of its most significant crises since the conclusion of the war, prompted by the first-instance ruling from the Court of BiH against RS President Milorad Dodik for his failure to comply with the decisions made by the High Representative in BiH.

Following the ruling, the RS National Assembly passed a law that prohibits the functioning of the Prosecutor’s Office, the Court of BiH, and the BiH Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) within the RS territory.

Dodik has also indicated plans to establish a new Constitution for the RS that would reclaim various powers related to the judiciary, police, intelligence, military, and indirect taxation, which had been transferred to the national level after the Dayton Agreement.
