We recognize Brest’s numerous top players, but it’s still always a seven-on-seven match.
After making strides from Bucharest to Brest, it became evident following the June draw in Vienna that the Budućnost handball team, led by Bojana Popović, would face top-tier teams consistently throughout the season.
This weekend marks a showdown with a formidable opponent, featuring players like Ana Vjahireva, Poleta Fopa, and Melin Nokandi. It will also be the first match in “Morača,” as the “Blues” have been competing in the “Bemax Arena” in recent years.
The second round of the Champions League will take place in Podgorica’s handball temple this Sunday at 14:00.
“We are aware that the season ahead will be challenging, with a tough group where we are unlikely to be the favorites in any match. However, I always remind the team that regardless of how many star players are on the opposing side, every game is fundamentally seven against seven,” Bojana Popović stated during the press conference.
The French squad boasts greater depth and a more robust bench; however…
“They are expected to maintain a high tempo for longer periods. Nonetheless, we will focus solely on the players present on the court at any given time. We aim to improve gradually from game to game,” Bojana added.
Despite a tough summer that left uncertainty hanging over the club, Iviona Pavićević and her teammates put forth a commendable performance against Rapid in Bucharest, despite the loss. The “Blues” managed an excellent first half, but could not sustain it for the full match.
“There was a concentration lapse on offense led by younger players, with mistakes that might not be evident from the sidelines. Just a couple of lackluster attacks can shift momentum, allowing the opponent to extend their lead,” Bojana elaborated.
Did the rotations impact the second half’s result?
“It’s not solely about rotations or the physical inability to sustain the match. You can compete with strong teams for one half; however, as the opposing team adjusts to the young players’ capabilities, a slight dip occurs since they can’t maintain their initial pace throughout the match. The core issue lies more with creativity and the skill level these players can bring rather than fatigue, highlighting the need for those coming off the bench to progressively enhance their performance,” explained the renowned handball player.
Transforming Adversity into Opportunity
While the season began with the expectation of a strong Budućnost team, the departure of the primary sponsor led to several key exits. Nevertheless, this situation has opened doors for promising talents like Nikolina Marković and Jelena Vukčević.
“Following the match against Rapid, players began discussing their performance—something that wasn’t typical before. The circumstances have united the team. I believe that the young players taking advantage of their newly found opportunities will only continue to grow,” Bojana stated.
Brest: More Than Just Vjahireva, Every Point Matters
The head coach of the significant Podgorica team recognizes the formidable challenge they face in their first match at “Morača,” especially against an opponent that outperformed Vipers in their initial game.
“Brest features Vjahireva, who is pivotal, but the supporting lineup is also quite capable, necessitating our attention on multiple fronts. We will employ varied defensive strategies since we lack the personnel to maintain a uniform 6-0 defense throughout the full 60 minutes. A 5-1 formation could disrupt any team if we remain steadfast,” Popović commented.
The former superstar, who has lifted the Champions League trophy six times, approaches the season with realism while understanding the challenges ahead.
“We will strive to meet our limits, but we must also have a clear understanding of what those limits are. We are aware of the caliber of our opponents, yet we always aim to surprise. Each point earned in this Champions League season is an achievement. There’s no need to deceive ourselves about our capabilities; we know who we are competing against, but I consistently set high aspirations. I want us to leave each match knowing we have given our all,” she concluded.
“Morača” Rekindles Fond Memories
Bojana also celebrated her last Champions League victory while wearing the Budućnost jersey in “Morača.” After a four-season hiatus, she now returns to Montenegro’s most significant venue.
“Returning to ‘Morača’ brings back emotions and can serve as additional motivation, especially if the stands are fuller than usual. It’s time to acknowledge the hard work and the youth in our team,” Popović remarked.
In conclusion, she offered a candid perspective on the current state of Montenegrin sports.
“I truly don’t understand why clubs in Montenegro—handball or otherwise—don’t receive genuine support from their fans. Sport is the one thing that binds people, and each medal brought here has proven that,” Bojana concluded.
Entrance to this Sunday’s match at “Morača” will be free.
