“Eco Pioneers: Women Leading the Charge for a Sustainable Future through Innovative Businesses and Projects”
In celebration of International Women’s Day, the “Eco Heroines” campaign was unveiled at the European House, honoring Montenegrin female entrepreneurs and activists who are pioneering a sustainable future through their ecological ventures and projects.
Five remarkable women – Mia Pejović (Atelje “Propuh”), Jelena Rakčević (NGO Zeleni talas), Milena Đukanović (Miđu Accessoires), Nada Tadić (Duga Toys), and Milena Živković (Mental Ecology) – shared their insights with Selda Jahjagić from the Young European Ambassadors.
During the discussion, they explored how they have turned their eco-friendly concepts into viable sustainable initiatives, while also addressing the obstacles they encounter in Montenegrin society.
Mia Pejović introduced “eco-graphics,” an artistic fusion of craftsmanship and ecology, which involves creating organic paper and natural paints that honor Montenegro’s cultural heritage and biodiversity.
“Nature does not create excess – this is the principle that guides my work,” emphasized Mia.
Jelena Rakčević from the NGO Zeleni talas highlighted that recycling is more than a necessity; it is a lifestyle. She commended the collaboration with the EU on initiatives like “Green Ambassadors” and the “Digital Guide for Creating Green Initiatives,” which play a significant role in enhancing awareness of sustainability.
Milena Đukanović seamlessly integrates science, design, and ecology through her 3D-printed jewelry, crafted from recycled materials to celebrate the cultural and natural heritage of the country.
Nada Tadić, a dedicated hiker and founder of Duga Toys, emphasizes her commitment to environmental conservation through the creation of handmade toys from natural materials.
Milena Živković merges art with sustainability in her project “Mental Ecology,” believing that art serves as a medium to reinterpret an imperfect representation of the world.
“Everyone is encouraged to get involved,” stated Milena.
The eco-heroines are distinctive in their purpose—through their green initiatives, they advocate for environmental protection, as well as for the culture and history of Montenegro, while also stressing the importance of ongoing involvement at both individual and systemic levels.
