For the first time in “Morača” after a year and a half… Budućnost’s handball players are set to face Brest in the opening match of the new Champions League season in Podgorica – the 2nd round match is scheduled for 14:00 p.m.
The proud squad from Podgorica has endured a lot recently, especially this summer with concerns about closure, and now they aim to revel in the thrill of top European handball – emerging united after a challenging time.
– This season, we have a strong bond; we truly are a team and a family. Our energy is high, and that’s one of our strengths – said the “Blues” captain, Ivona Pavićević.
In their first round, Budućnost played a solid 40 minutes against Rapid in Bucharest but ultimately lacked the stamina to maintain their performance – now they face another formidable opponent.
– We are committed to our game in every match; we will focus on our performance and give our all, and in the end, we will see if it’s enough for victory – Ivona added.
ANY TEAM CAN BE DEFEATED
Brest started the new season flawlessly – the exceptional Russian Ana Vjahireva and her teammates in the Champions League triumphed over Vipers and then secured victory in their domestic league against Chambre.
– We are welcoming a fantastic team with exceptional players, but I firmly believe every team can be stopped – I want us to play our game at home – Pavićević asserted.
She is confident that a strong offensive strategy could be the key to pulling off an upset.
– It’s crucial to prevent Brest from executing their game plan. We need to excel in both attack and defense, especially on offense, aiming for smart, patient play with minimal technical errors – noted the left wing of the “Blues”.
The captain is eager to return to “Morača”.
– We are excited for the match; after so many years, we are going back to “Morača,” a place that holds special energy and emotions for us. I’m sure it will be an excellent match.
STRENGTH AT THE GOAL POST
Despite the departure of their main sponsor leaving some roles unfilled, Budućnost should have no worries about their goalkeeping situation. With the talented Armel Atingre enhanced by the addition of Sakura Hauge, they are in good hands.
– It’s a relief having Hauge here – she brings a wealth of experience and is a bit older than I am, along with a distinctive defensive style. There’s less pressure on me now, and she can serve as a great role model – said Atingre, who spoke in Montenegrin at the press conference ahead of the match against Brest.
The player who recently represented Montenegro understands all too well the challenge posed by the team from the country where she began her handball career.
– Brest boasts a strong defensive lineup, and alongside Ana Vjahireva are Melin Nokandi and Anika Lot… Their experience will require us to work hard and remain focused. I expect a fierce competition, so we must be smart and composed – concluded Atingre.
Budućnost and Brest were also opponents in the group last season; after a surprising draw in France (20:20), the “Blues” could not keep up, and Brest took a decisive victory in Podgorica (34:21) shortly after.
MATCHES IN THE 2ND ROUND OF GROUP B: Budućnost – Brest (14:00), Ludvigsburg – Đer (14:00), Esbjerg – Odense (16:00). The previous day: Vipers – Rapid 30:30.
