As the history of Montenegrin handball and Budućnosti is being penned, Suzana Lazović stood out as an indomitable force on defense—no player welcomed matches against the Lionesses and the giants from Podgorica.
Now at the start of a significant chapter in her career, she aspires for the same competitive spirit in the girls she will coach.
“I want everyone to dread facing us,” stated Suzana Lazović after her official introduction as the head coach of the Montenegrin women’s handball team, further adding.
“Montenegro has always built its game around that tenacity and achieved results. I’m not focused on the past; we’re starting anew. I have my personal philosophy and strategy aimed in the right direction, and the results will be evident at the European Championship.”
I Will Cultivate My Philosophy
Through her work with younger teams and her experience in Hungary with Alba Fehervar, she has demonstrated her potential in her new role, yet acknowledges that she’s only at the beginning of her development as a coach.
“Being part of the national team is both an honor and a responsibility for me, especially as someone who was raised in this system… Nevertheless, I will cultivate my philosophy, and I firmly believe this national team will regain its former glory. Montenegro has always been known for its resilience and bravery, and I’m confident these girls will exemplify that every day,” emphasized Lazović.
The Lionesses commenced the EHF week today with their new coach, marking the beginning of preparations for the European Championship later this year. Demonstrating her faith in young talent, Suzana immediately invited four debutants to the first meeting: Milica Trifunović, Andrijana Tatar, along with junior national team members Sara Burić and Ivana Vujadinović.
“There are other players who may not be listed now but will certainly be considered in the future; I want to provide opportunities for every talented child to represent Montenegro,” Suzana made clear.
Defense Will Be the Cornerstone
Under the new coach, Montenegro’s hallmark is expected to be its defense.
“That will be the foundation of every game as well as my philosophy moving forward—it has brought me success before, and I am certain that following this approach will yield results. I have no doubt that the girls will leave no stone unturned.”
She reflected on her transition from the playing field to the coaching staff.
“Upon starting this journey, I realized how much I didn’t know as a player and the complexity of being a coach.”
I Consulted All Past Coaches
Suzana Lazović took over from Bojana Popović, a former teammate with whom she celebrated Olympic silver and Champions League victory…
“I spoke with her and all the past coaches; I wanted to garner their insights and experiences, as well as the challenges they faced… Their guidance has been invaluable.”
Did she have any previous coaches she looked up to?
“Dragan Adžić is someone who significantly influenced my development and contributed to my successes, but I realize I must also forge my own system… His perspective on handball has greatly aided me. Additionally, there are coaches in younger categories and former selectors like Per Johanson and Kim Rasmusen, and I believe I can draw quality insights from all of them while making necessary adjustments to meet our needs,” concluded Suzana.
Professional Staff Includes Igor Marković and Sonja Barjaktarović
During today’s press conference, Petar Kapisoda, President of the Handball Association of Montenegro, disclosed that Suzana Lazović has signed a two-year contract, mentioning that she will soon introduce her coaching staff.
“I opted for Igor Marković, Sonja Barjaktarović, and Danica Delić… I have assembled a professional team that I trust completely and who are eager to join me. Igor and I share a lot of ideas—I believe they will be instrumental, as I’ve realized that one perspective alone isn’t enough. Having the right people by my side is essential,” emphasized Lazović.
