While the owners might not be fully prepared for Rijeka to claim the title of Croatia’s champion, Radomir Đalović and the players certainly have faith in their ambitions.
The Rijeka team triumphed over Dinamo Zagreb with a score of 4:0 during the derby match, maintaining their top position in the league standings—defying all predictions following the departure of key players in the January transfer window.
Đalović’s squad displayed dominance at Rujevica, and their task was made easier starting from the 37th minute when Dinamo’s striker Kanga was sent off, leaving them with an extra player on the field.
The French forward Djuara opened the scoring for the home team in the 27th minute. After gaining a player advantage, Rijeka managed to break down the Zagreb team, with Janković and Petrovič finding the net before halftime, followed by Čop in the second half.
“My players performed brilliantly and have once again demonstrated that they have been unfairly overlooked. We have brought in players who know how to win and achieve trophies, and with fans like these, we can accomplish a lot. I am thrilled—this is the greatest victory of my coaching career,” remarked Đalović.
Currently, Rijeka holds a one-point lead over second-placed Hajduk, who convincingly defeated Osijek 4:0 today, with Livaj scoring twice.
Dinamo Zagreb trails significantly, sitting seven points behind the 1st HNL leaders.
“I am very frustrated with the defensive responses. But that’s football—one moment you beat Milan and you’re at the top, and the next you lose to Rijeka and you feel at your lowest,” expressed the legendary Cannavaro.
