Another great match against Đero: Nikolina Marković, Photo: Dejan Starčević/ŽRK Budućnost
With a newly added second star above the coat of arms, the Future is now in the hands of Dragan Cvijic and Katarina Bulatović, who in February 2016 clinched a victory over Đer. It was the most significant derby of the era, and few could have predicted that the Podgorica giant would go on to lose the following 15 matches against the Hungarian powerhouse.
Challenging times ensued for Budućnost, as Đer secured a string of impressive wins, before facing an unexpected setback — they were halted by a team that, over the summer, was unsure of their place in the Champions League, despite being the reigning European champions.
Buducnost delivered one of their finest performances in years, managing to secure a well-deserved draw against the six-time champions, ending the game at 23:23.
– It’s truly a great pleasure, and this result indicates that our efforts have paid off – remarked Nikolina Marković, the promising center back of Budućnost.
While Budućnost may not be viewed as favorites in the Champions League, this generation has demonstrated that the club from Podgorica still possesses a talent for competing at high levels.
– It’s clear that we’re a young team, which I believe is a factor contributing to our positive results. Our youth fuels our desire to play, excel, and prove ourselves, guided by the experience of our more seasoned teammates whom we look up to. Additionally, we had effective preparation for this match – the young Budućnost handball player added.
Ten months ago, Nikolina dazzled in her blue jersey against Đer, despite the loss – this October, she showcased her talent with two crucial goals.
– It’s certain that good performances only boost my self-confidence. I aim to maintain that confidence and deliver more top-notch performances in the future – said Budućnost’s “number 14.”
Her position inevitably comes with added pressure.
– Pressure is always present while playing and training at a professional level. I’m learning to view pressure as a positive challenge and to use it to foster my personal growth – she clarifies.
In the backline, she is supported by experienced and talented handball players, notably Jelena Radivojević, who is the true leader of this team.
– Having someone like that alongside me is invaluable. I can observe her play and discuss various situations I may encounter on the court. Particularly when it comes to the small details and agreements that are crucial.
Could the draw against Đero signal the beginning of a season filled with remarkable achievements and positive outcomes?
– We are certainly striving for that, as we’ve cultivated the right mindset and character, proving that we can compete with anyone – concluded Nikolina.
