“We’re Seeking Revenge for Past Defeats”

The Montenegrin women’s national football team is set to kick off a new competition cycle in the UEFA Nations League with their upcoming match against Azerbaijan this Friday in Baku.

As they begin their journey in Group C4, the Montenegrin national team will not only face Azerbaijan but will also take on Lithuania on Tuesday at the Training Camp of the Football Association.

Under the leadership of coach Mirko Marić, the team has successfully reached the play-offs in the previous two cycles, first aiming for promotion to UEFA League B, and then competing in the EURO 2025 qualifiers as the runners-up in the group stage.

Armisa Kuč, the leading scorer from Turkish club Fomget, stated that the team’s ambition is to qualify for League B.

“We are ready to achieve this after making significant progress before. I am confident that we possess the quality needed to reach our goals,” Kuč remarked.

Helena Božić, a defender for Dinamo Moscow, expressed her belief that Montenegro holds the potential to ascend in European women’s football.

“I am hopeful that we will capitalize on this opportunity, rectify our past mistakes, and advance from here,” Božić stated.

Azerbaijan stands as a familiar adversary in this opening match.

This team previously triumphed over Montenegro twice in the last edition of the Nations League, winning 1:0 in Podgorica and 3:0 in Baku, which secured their promotion to the higher tier.

“Azerbaijan remains our biggest rival this time as well; thus, this first game is crucial. They play with a lot of aggression, which isn’t our strongest area, but we believe we are the superior team. We need to match their energy and aggression, demonstrate our confidence in football, and I am convinced that we can prove ourselves and earn points,” Kuč explained.

Božić emphasized the challenges posed by the Azerbaijani team.

“Their gameplay structure could be challenging for us, yet if we fulfill all conditions, I am confident we will have no issues. We have a strong motivation to avenge our previous defeats and showcase on the field that we are a better team,” Božić concluded.
