In an exciting match last night in Athens, Olympiakos players triumphed over Bayern Munich (112:69) in the 20th round of the Euroleague, with Saša Vezenkov leading the charge.
Vezenkov, representing Bulgaria, achieved a remarkable 35 points in 45 minutes of play, along with seven rebounds, resulting in an impressive index rating of 52.
This performance marks Vezenkov’s personal best in the Euroleague and stands as the third-highest tally in the competition’s history. Only Nigel Hayes-Davies, who scored 50 points against Alba last season, and Shane Larkin, with 49 points for Bayern five years ago, have surpassed him.
“I never imagined I would make history in an Olympiakos jersey. I want to express my gratitude to the fans – it’s important for them as well,” Vezenkov stated post-game.
Vezenkov was flawless in his two-point shooting (10/10) and made 8 of his 10 attempts from beyond the arc.
“It was one of those nights where everything clicked. I missed my first shot, but then I found my rhythm, thanks in large part to my teammates, who played incredibly. However, I don’t want to focus solely on myself. It was a memorable evening, and I will keep working hard,” Vezenkov shared.
Although Fournier and Papanikolau were sidelined, Olympiakos showcased their depth, finishing the game with 36 assists, a club record.
“Everyone contributed effectively. We dedicate this victory to Fournier and Papanikolau, who were missed. Achieving 36 assists is pleasing and aligns with our philosophy. We prioritize ball movement and assisting – that’s what the coach advocates. We worked together, allowing us to score over 100 points,” Vezenkov remarked.
The coach of the “red and whites,” Jorgos Barcokas, also commended the record night. “Sasha was phenomenal, but the whole team executed wonderfully. It’s fantastic to have 36 assists in the Euroleague,” Barcokas noted.
With this victory, Olympiakos stands at the top of the table with a record of 14-6 after 20 rounds.
