Inflation Rate at 2.8% for January

The prices of personal consumption goods and services, as indicated by the consumer price index, rose by an average of 2.8% in January compared to the same month last year, based on data from Monstat.

When compared to December of the previous year, consumer prices in January saw an average increase of 1.2%.

“The largest contributors to the monthly inflation rate were the increases in the prices of the following categories: water supply, tobacco, milk, cheese and eggs, vegetables, meat, fuel, and lubricants for motor vehicles,” the statement explained.

Compared to 2023, consumer prices on average were 3.3% higher last year.

When observing the main categories of products and services based on consumption purpose, in January, growth was noted in several categories: alcoholic beverages and tobacco increased by 4.8%, recreation and culture by 2.6%, housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels by 2.3%, food and non-alcoholic beverages by 1.7%, furniture, household equipment, and routine home maintenance by 1.3%, health by 1%, and transportation and other goods and services each by 0.6%.

A decline of 2.7% was noted in the clothing and footwear category.

The prices of other products and services remained relatively stable.
