It is clear that the largest share of responsibility for increasing the representation of women in politics rests with men, as they predominantly occupy decision-making roles, stated Vatroslav Belan, a prominent leader of the European Union and president of the Liberal Party (LP).

The European Union has announced that this remark was made during the roundtable discussion titled “Men as Agents of Change,” which focused on various experiences and practices concerning the engagement of male political leaders to enhance women’s political participation.

According to the statement, the roundtable was part of the conference “Engaging Male Political Leaders for Women’s Participation in Politics,” organized by the European Liberal Forum and the “Olof Palme International Center.” The event saw participation from representatives of social democratic, liberal, and green parties and organizations throughout the region and Europe.

The conference took place in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

“Participants shared their past practices and experiences related to the hurdles faced in increasing the number of women in active politics, particularly in senior party and state roles. They emphasized the necessity for liberal social democrats and all progressive movements and organizations in Europe to unite as never before to safeguard the attained freedoms, human rights, and shared values that are the foundation of modern Europe. Mirha Tahirović, a member of the Main Board of the Social Democrats, also participated in the conference,” the European Alliance stated.
