The “Blues” performed admirably during the first segment of the regional competition, encountering only a single defeat against Spartak in Podgorica. They triumphed over Partizan in Belgrade and displayed outstanding gameplay, proving they will be formidable contenders throughout the season.

Andrej Žakel’s squad is set to face Mornar in the ABA League tonight (17), where they are regarded as the strong favorite in this Montenegrin derby. This game presents an opportunity to solidify their standing in the regional league before the upcoming match against Hapoel in “Morač,” which is part of the 15th round of the Eurocup.

– Initially, our approach is paramount, and we have discussed this with the players as it’s a prerequisite for all other aspects. Players need to demonstrate character and professionalism, which comes before tactics and strategy – Žakelj stated.

There’s no time to relax – Budućnost recently faced Trefl Sopot in Poland at the start of 2025, followed by a game against Dubai in Podgorica, and then they head to Istanbul to confront Bahceşehir.

– We are preparing as we have for every team so far. We must focus on regeneration; we took a day to rest, and now our complete attention is on Mornar – Žakelj emphasized.

Although Mornar has only secured one victory, they have displayed signs of improvement against Split and Igokea.

– If you allow Sailor to play their game, they possess quality players. They showcased their talent against Igokea and Split, so I demand our full concentration to validate our status as favorites – Žakelj remarked.

In the ABA league, Buducnost has triumphed over Mornar in the last nine encounters, and they remain undefeated at home against their rivals from Bar.

– Mornar has performed well in their previous two games. We are aware of how to attack them and play effectively to secure a win. While we may be favorites on paper, there is no room for complacency, as Mornar can deliver quality basketball – stated Nikola Tanasković, forward for the Blues.

According to the basketball player, defense is crucial, and the objective for Buducnost is to neutralize Brenden Jenkins.

– The key lies in our defense, specifically stopping their top players – especially Jenkins as a leader. If we achieve that, I believe we will succeed – Tanasković explained.

Mornar faces a challenging schedule ahead. After hosting Budućnost, the Barani will welcome Crvena zvezda, followed by a visit to Cedevita Olimpija, and later, Mega comes to Bar.

– Budućnost looks extremely strong against Zvezda. They are well-integrated, boasting exceptional players at every position, along with two of the league’s best playmakers and phenomenal shooters, Maggie and Sulaimon. Coach Žakel’s influence is evident as the team plays exceptionally well, and the results support that. Our aim isn’t to threaten them but to compete as best as we can against a top-performing team – said Mihailo Pavićević, coach of the Sailors.
