“Councilors in Berane Must Prioritize the Needs of All Citizens Now”

Mirjana Babić, a representative of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) in the Berane Municipal Assembly, stated that the party is optimistic about the unanimous adoption of the draft Decision on subsidizing prices for vulnerable consumers of individual utility services and municipal wastewater management at the upcoming session.

“It is essential for all councilors to prioritize the interests of all citizens, particularly those most affected by rising prices,” her statement emphasized.

She noted that the DPS Berane Councilors’ Club had proposed a draft Decision aimed at subsidizing prices for vulnerable users of utility services, specifically to “alleviate the adverse impacts of the staggering 130% increase in water prices.”

The statement reiterated that during the election campaign, as well as after the local elections, they committed to acting responsibly and solely in the best interests of all residents of Berane.

“The initial step toward fulfilling this promise was the presentation of several amendments to the Budget, intending to redirect existing resources toward projects that yield tangible benefits for citizens,” the statement added.

She expressed disappointment that, despite being the amendment proposers, they were not invited to the sessions of the parliamentary working bodies – the Committee on Statute and Regulations and the Committee on Budget, Economy and Development.

“Even more concerning is the decision of the ruling majority to reject our amendment regarding the ‘Kindergarten for All’ initiative, which aims to provide free kindergarten for every child,” the statement continued.

She further emphasized that in an era where we are witnessing daily departures of young people and families, alongside a negative demographic trend, it is crucial to set aside party interests and not dismiss proposed measures simply because they originate from the DPS Councilors’ Club.

“Such an irresponsible approach from the ruling majority towards the city and its citizens will not deter us, as a responsible political entity, from pursuing actions that safeguard the interests of all Berane citizens, rather than just those of privileged individuals. Those accountable for handling the funds of Berane citizens must do so responsibly and transparently, ensuring that all can reap the benefits,” the statement concluded.
