The clash between players of the Montenegrin national team in Azerbaijan was won by Marko Janković, who netted the solitary goal in the derby at Neftchi Stadium in Baku with a penalty kick in the final minute – 1:0.
The architect of the play for Qarabag, the “eternal” champions of Azerbaijan, Janković approached the ball in the 87th minute at the behest of his teammates and executed a cheeky “panenka” to outsmart the Nefchi goalkeeper.
Nefči had a golden opportunity to extend their winning streak, having secured two consecutive victories, with Edvin Kuč starting the match. The home side played with a numerical advantage from the 22nd minute after Medina was shown a red card.
Nevertheless, Qarabag remained resilient, and Gurban Gurbanov’s squad earned a penalty due to a counter-attack and a decisive break by Brazilian Borges, compounded by a careless foul from his fellow countryman, Yuri Matijas.
Kuč played until halftime, while Marko Vešović observed the match from the bench, supporting his Qarabag teammates.
As of the conclusion of the 23rd round, Qarabag stands at the top of the league table, holding a 12-point lead over the closest competitor, Araz.
