“Sharks: The Group of Serbia and Greece”
The Montenegro water polo national team has identified its opponents for the qualification tournament in the A division of the World Cup.
The “Sharks” will compete in Group A during the tournament set to take place in Bucharest from January 7 to 12 next year, facing off against Greece and Serbia.
Four groups have been established for the event in the Romanian capital, with group winners advancing directly to the quarterfinals, while second and third place teams will vie for a spot in the top eight.
Group A includes France, Spain, and Hungary, while Group C comprises Romania, Japan, and the USA. Group D features Croatia and Georgia, following the suspension of Italy and the withdrawal of Australia from the tournament.
From this tournament, six top teams and two from the B division will qualify for the Super Final of the World Cup, which is scheduled for April 2025.
The top three teams from the World Cup will qualify for the event in Singapore, taking place from July 11 to August 3.
Montenegro has previously participated in the World Cup only once, in 2014, where the almost B squad finished sixth in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The pressing question remains who will be the head coach for our national team ahead of their first match since August, as the successor to Vladimir Gojković is yet to be announced.
The legendary coach left his position after his contract expired following the Olympic Games in Paris, and the new appointment is expected to be revealed soon, likely after the new president of the Water Polo and Swimming Association of Montenegro is determined.
The electoral assembly is scheduled for Friday in Podgorica, with Nikola Milić and Veljko Uskoković as the main candidates for the leading role in VPSCG.
