Thursday marks the official opening of the European Championship, a significant day for the host nations, and on Friday, in Debrecen, the new chapter of the Montenegrin handball players’ Euro journey will commence.
The Lionesses are putting the finishing touches on their preparations for the eighth continental championship, and as remarks from our national team indicate, all the players and coach Suzana Lazović are eager for the competition to start.
“We are prepared – we’ve had ample time to analyze everything necessary to secure points,” stated Dijana Mugoša, Montenegro’s left wing.
Since the inaugural European Championship in 2010, expectations have been high for the “lionesses,” who won gold in Belgrade in 2012. At the upcoming tournament, co-hosted by Austria, Hungary, and Switzerland, they aim to defend their bronze medal from the last EHF Euro.
“Of course, there are always high expectations when Montenegro plays. We believe in ourselves and are confident about our chances, but we are taking it step by step. I trust we will advance from the group,” Mugoša added.
In their group at the “Phoenix Arena” in northeastern Hungary, Montenegro will compete against Serbia, Romania, and the Czech Republic, with their opening match against their northern neighbors, a team they have defeated twice in previous European Championships.
What will set this match apart from their qualifiers?
“It’s different because this is the European Championship, not just qualifiers. It’s also significant as it’s the opening match of the championship, but I believe we are ready,” Mugoša explained.
Will the first match present additional challenges?
“Definitely, the opener in major tournaments is always the most crucial. It’s vital for us to build our confidence and carry that momentum forward,” Dijana emphasized.
Aside from Jelena Radivojević, who withdrew for personal reasons, Montenegro will field its strongest current lineup for this Euro.
“Every player is invaluable to us, especially since we have a limited pool. I believe we are in a strong position now, perhaps not entirely complete, but certainly stronger than before,” concluded the Craiova handball player.
The match against Serbia is scheduled for Friday at 20:30, while the championship will kick off the day prior with games including Hungary vs. Turkey, Spain vs. Portugal, and Austria vs. Slovakia.
