Scandal, disgrace, images that we hoped were left in the past… The matchup of the SBbet First League for handball between Beran and Lovćen was not a sporting occasion at all.
This clash between the teams from northern Montenegro and Cetinje, who have been rivals since the years following the restoration of independence and had not competed from 2013 to 2020 due to Beran’s disbandment, turned into a spectacle of shame because of the incidents that erupted from the stands in the hall under Jasikovac.
During the match, fans of the home team hurled plastic bottles at the Cetinje players, insulted them with slurs, and even invaded the field to confront the visiting team…
At one point, players from both teams engaged in an altercation, but their more level-headed teammates prevented the situation from escalating further.
The chaos was punctuated by chants from the stands in support of Dragoljub Draža Mihailović, as well as for Kosovo and Serbia.
This behavior is undeniably unacceptable in sports, particularly not in a contest between two Montenegrin teams.
Since the disbandment of Berane ten years ago, a new club was established under the name Berane 1949, which returned to the First League in 2020.
In the match played over the weekend, the reigning champions, Lovćen, ultimately emerged victorious with a score of 26:22.
