The second-tier team, Preston, has progressed to the round of 16 in the FA Cup, the oldest football tournament in existence.
Milutin Osmajić’s squad faced a much tougher challenge than their opponents below them in the rankings, Wycombe. However, after a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, they achieved a significant victory and continue their journey toward the final.
After an intense 120 minutes at Deepdale, where excitement was high but goals were not, the match was decided by penalties.
The Montenegrin international successfully converted Preston’s second penalty, striking powerfully and accurately into the corner. With his teammate Woodman saving two Wycombe penalties, a missed attempt by McCann didn’t prove costly for the home side.
The identity of their opponent in the next round will be revealed on Monday, but as the tournament progresses, the likelihood increases that they may face one of the top teams from the Premier League.
Earlier today, Manchester City secured their place in the round of 16 with a win (1-2) away against Leyton Orient. Later in the day, Bournemouth (0-2 away win against Everton), Fulham (1-0 away win against Wigan), along with Ipswich, Burnley, and Cardiff also advanced.
