“You know why,” are the chilling words uttered by Aco Martinovic before he killed his sister, Zorica Vuletić, one of the twelve victims of the tragic massacre in Cetinje.

Martinovic committed the crime in her home. He took the life of this young mother… Her two babies, Zorica’s daughters, just a few months old, will grow up without any memory of their mother, carrying the trauma of that day for a lifetime. They were cradled in their aunt’s arms as they faced the horrifying reality of death… Zorica’s husband and brother, the fathers of the little girls holding the babies, were silenced in that moment.

“You sit still, or I’ll kill you too,” the attacker barked.

“I’ve killed ten of them, and now it’s your turn,” reflect the premeditated nature of his heinous act, indicating he had specifically targeted Zorica upon entering her home, sparing the others. One shouldn’t ponder “why.” Yet, one “why” becomes significant when considering the murder of a sister at her own doorstep, right in front of her four children. According to those familiar with Aco’s family, Zorica was always concerned for him, even welcoming in the New Year in her home.

Two wine glasses, a few playful cats, a neatly arranged entrance, and ashtrays… all that remains in front of a home that has been profoundly affected.

However, the house is not completely empty. Today, everyone attended Zorica’s funeral in the village not far from Cetinje. Yet that silence, coupled with the sharp mountain winds, creates an unbearably sad scene around this home, as if time stands still—a moment frozen like a scar on the hearts of those children.

No “why” can provide clarity in the face of such devastation.
