Slovenian basketball star Luka Dončić expressed his deep desire to bring a championship title to Dallas, where he once envisioned spending his entire NBA career.

In a heartfelt letter shared tonight, Dončić bid farewell to the Dallas Mavericks, their fans, and the city after being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The unexpected decision left both the player and the wider NBA community, including fans and media, in shock.

“Seven years ago, I arrived here as a teenager, driven by the dream of playing basketball at the highest level. I truly believed I would spend my entire career in Dallas, and winning a title meant everything to me. The love and support from all of you has exceeded my wildest dreams,” Dončić stated.

“As a young kid from Slovenia coming to the U.S. for the first time, North Texas felt like home, thanks to you all. Through every challenge, from injuries to the NBA Finals, your unwavering support has been a constant. I appreciate not only the joy you shared during my greatest moments but also the strength you offered during tough times,” he added.

Dončić expressed gratitude to all the organizations he collaborated with in the community, acknowledging the opportunity to give back to those in need.

“As I embark on this new chapter of my basketball career, I leave behind a city that will always hold a special place in my heart. Dallas is a remarkable city, and Mavs fans are unmatched. Thank you deeply,” Dončić concluded.

Dončić enjoyed immense popularity in Dallas, with his Mavericks jersey bearing the number 77 ranking among the top eight best-selling items in the NBA’s online store during the earlier part of the season. He concluded his time at the Mavericks as their sixth-leading scorer, second in three-pointers, third in rebounds, and fifth in assists.

After joining the Lakers, he took to social media to express his gratitude for the incredible opportunity.

“Basketball is my everything, and no matter where I play, I will approach it with the same joy, passion, and determination to win the title,” Dončić remarked.

The trade resulted in Dončić, Maxi Kleber, and Markiph Morris heading to the Lakers, while Anthony Davis and Max Christie join the ranks in Dallas.
