Borjana Krišto, the Chairperson of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), has accepted the resignation of Minister of Security, Nenad Nešić, and has dismissed him from his position.

“Following the personal request and resignation of the Minister of Security in the Council of Ministers, Nenad Nešić, Krišto has today, in accordance with Article 14 of the Law on the Council of Ministers of BiH, dismissed him. As the Chair of the Council of Ministers of BiH, I express my gratitude to Minister Nešić for his good cooperation and service within the institution of the Council of Ministers of BiH,” the statement indicates.

The process to appoint Nešić’s successor will proceed according to the stipulations of the Law on the Council of Ministers of BiH, as outlined in the statement.

Nešić was taken into custody on December 26 of the previous year, on suspicion of corruption. Despite his initial refusal to resign, he ultimately did so while in custody, communicated through his lawyer, after the House of Representatives voted for his dismissal on January 23, despite opposition from the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD).

The Republic of Croatia’s Prosecutor’s Office has alleged that, during his four-year leadership of the Public Enterprise “Putevi RS” from 2016 to 2020, Nešić accrued financial advantages totaling around one million marks (approximately half a million euros).

In addition to Nešić, the BiH Prosecutor’s Office has also charged Milan Dakić, the director of the Public Company “Putevi Republike Srpska”, and Mladen Lučić, the director of the private firm “Legend”, with criminal offenses related to money laundering, abuse of office, and bribery during their managerial roles at “Putevi RS” and an undisclosed company.

According to the BiH Prosecutor’s Office, funds were unlawfully extracted from the Public Enterprise “Putevi RS” through contrived legal actions.

As per their claims, Nešić, in his role as director at the time, received 250,000 marks (around 125,000 euros) annually from those funds during his tenure.

The operation termed “Tunnel 2” was conducted by the State Prosecutor’s Office along with the Directorate for Organized and Serious Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Republika Srpska (RS). The first hearing related to the detention was held at the end of December.

As confirmed by the Chief Prosecutor of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milanko Kajganić, the criminal activities took place across both Bosnian entities.

Nešić had been serving as Minister of Security of BiH since 2022.

He is the leader of the Democratic People’s Alliance party, which is part of a coalition with the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats, led by Milorad Dodik, the president of the Republika Srpska entity.
